The Mahindra Thar Roxx continues to remain one of the most talked-about lifestyle SUVs in the Indian market. Built as the five-door version of the iconic Thar, the Roxx combines the familiar rugged styling of the Thar with a larger cabin, improved practicality, modern technology and multiple powertrain options.

Mahindra introduced the Thar Roxx in India in August 2024, with the SUV built on the company’s M_GLYDE platform. Since then, the lineup has expanded with additional variants, including the Thar Roxx Star Edition.

As of September 2026, the Thar Roxx is available with petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and selected diesel variants with four-wheel drive. Mahindra also announced an average 2.7% price increase across its SUV range effective July 10, 2026.

Thar Roxx Engine Options

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is offered with two engine choices: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.

The petrol engine produces up to 177hp and 380Nm, while the diesel engine produces up to 175hp and 370Nm, depending on the variant. Both engines can be paired with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions in applicable versions.

The diesel engine gets an additional advantage for off-road enthusiasts because selected diesel variants are available with a 4WD system.

Thar Roxx 4×4 Capability

One of the biggest reasons behind the popularity of the Thar Roxx is its off-road capability.

The SUV’s four-wheel-drive variants use Mahindra’s 4XPLOR system and are available with features such as an electronic locking differential, Smart Crawl and IntelliTurn. These technologies are designed to provide additional control when driving over challenging terrain.

Mahindra has also equipped the SUV with impressive off-road geometry. Recent specifications list a 650mm water-wading capacity, along with an approach angle of 41.3 degrees and departure angle of 36.1 degrees.

This makes the Thar Roxx more than just a lifestyle-focused SUV. The 4WD versions are designed to handle genuine off-road conditions.

Thar Roxx Design

The exterior design remains one of the biggest attractions of the SUV.

The Thar Roxx features a familiar upright stance, six-slot grille, circular-inspired LED projector headlamps and distinctive C-shaped daytime running lights. The longer five-door body gives it a more practical appearance compared with the three-door Thar.

The SUV also gets prominent wheel arches, rugged body cladding, large alloy wheels and an externally mounted spare wheel.

Higher variants are available with 19-inch alloy wheels, while lower variants use smaller wheels depending on configuration.

Mahindra originally offered the SUV in colours including Deep Forest, Everest White, Tango Red, Battleship Grey, Nebula Blue, Burnt Sienna and Stealth Black.

Thar Roxx Interior and Features

Inside, the Thar Roxx moves considerably further toward premium SUV territory than the traditional three-door Thar.

Depending on the variant, equipment includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument display, wireless smartphone connectivity, leatherette upholstery, automatic climate control and a sunroof.

Higher variants add a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, Harman Kardon audio system, blind-spot monitoring and other convenience features.

The five-seat configuration is another major advantage. Compared with the smaller three-door Thar, the Roxx offers more usable rear-seat space and easier access for passengers.

Thar Roxx Safety Features

Safety has been another important focus for Mahindra.

The Thar Roxx comes with six airbags as standard, along with electronic stability control and other safety equipment. Higher variants add features such as a 360-degree camera, parking sensors and advanced driver assistance technology.

The SUV also achieved a five-star Bharat NCAP rating for adult and child occupant protection, according to current automotive specifications.

This gives the Thar Roxx a stronger safety proposition alongside its rugged construction.

Thar Roxx Mileage

Mahindra has not provided a single universal fuel-efficiency figure for every Thar Roxx configuration.

Mileage can vary significantly depending on the engine, gearbox, drivetrain, traffic conditions, driving style and vehicle load. Petrol automatic and diesel 4WD versions, for example, can have different real-world fuel consumption.

For buyers primarily concerned about running costs, the diesel engine may be worth considering, particularly for users who regularly cover longer distances.

Thar Roxx Variants

The Thar Roxx lineup has become quite extensive.

Current variant families include MX1, MX3, MX5, AX3L, AX5L, Star Edition and AX7L. Depending on the trim, buyers can choose between petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic gearboxes, and RWD or 4WD configurations.

The AX7L sits at the top of the range and brings premium features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, Harman Kardon audio and blind-spot monitoring.

Thar Roxx Star Edition

The Thar Roxx Star Edition is one of the newer additions to the lineup.

Mahindra introduced it in January 2026 with an introductory price starting at ₹16.85 lakh. The edition was designed to add a more exclusive look and additional equipment to the Thar Roxx range.

Current listings show Star Edition petrol and diesel configurations, with features including ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and acoustic windshield depending on the version.

Thar Roxx vs Three-Door Thar

The Thar Roxx is not simply a Thar with two additional doors.

The Roxx uses a longer platform and provides five seats, making it considerably more practical for families. Mahindra itself describes the standard Thar as a three-door, four-seat lifestyle SUV, while the Roxx is a five-door, five-seat SUV intended to offer greater everyday usability.

The Thar Roxx also receives a more powerful engine tune, additional technology and a larger feature list.

For buyers who want the classic Thar appearance but need better rear-seat accessibility and family practicality, the Roxx represents a different proposition within the Thar family.

Who Should Consider the Mahindra Thar Roxx?

The Thar Roxx is aimed at buyers who want a combination of lifestyle appeal, road presence and practical usability.

The 2WD versions can suit customers who mainly drive in cities and highways but want the distinctive Thar design. Meanwhile, the diesel 4WD versions are more focused on buyers who plan to explore off-road trails or challenging terrain.

The larger cabin, five-seat layout, modern infotainment system and premium features also make it more suitable for everyday family use than the original three-door Thar.

Final Word

The Mahindra Thar Roxx has evolved into a broader SUV lineup since its 2024 launch. Its combination of five-door practicality, rugged styling, turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines, automatic transmission options and available 4WD makes it one of Mahindra’s key lifestyle SUV offerings.

The current range includes multiple trims from MX1 through AX7L, along with the Star Edition. Official Mahindra listings show the top AX7L diesel automatic 4WD at about ₹23.53 lakh ex-showroom, while the overall range starts much lower depending on the selected configuration.

With six airbags, advanced driver assistance on higher trims, a five-star Bharat NCAP rating, 650mm water-wading capability and a premium feature list, the Thar Roxx combines off-road credentials with everyday SUV functionality.
